First Look at The Full Collection of Nigerian Label, Ariaba's Agate Purses

Ariaba have finally dropped the full collection of their Agate appliquéd purses in different color ways all in luxé croc, ostrich and snake skins. Remember I previewed it on here earlier and promised to bring back the full collection…this is me fulfilling that promise.
Ariaba bags are produced here in Nigeria and one can only marvel at the quality of the product when you think for a second that all of the production is done in a place where mediocrity used to be acceptable.
One thing is certain, Nigerians now appreciate and support excellent products and can spot a mediocre one from a mile away. This is the first purse design to drop from their 2011 collection, more to come soon.

Sneak Peek at The Pearl Briefcase from the New Limited Edition Jidz Bag Collection

Nigerian designer Juliet David West is at it again with a new limited edition collection for her bag label, Jidz. The first piece to drop from the line exclusively for One Nigerian Boy and its fashionable audience is the Pearl Briefcase in all its quilted glory.

My high points of this briefcase are:

Color: Orange is so in, this year globally. Its youthful, vibrant and energetic.

Fabrication: Fusion of leather and a contrasting flowery fabric –looks like damask, not sure- adds a certain joie de vivre vibe.

Shape: Box bags are good to go any day.

Detailing: Quilts are always a visual delight. I’d buy this briefcase if it was bigger.

Lagos based Footwear and Accessories label Ariaba, which I introduced you guys to, earlier have added a line of chic purses made with exotic leather and embellished with Agate cut roughly for effect (see bag featured) and also jade and amber for the others. The inner lining of the bag with the label embossed on leather, adds a touch of finesse to the product. The sleek finishing is evident and they…yup they – I’ve seen more of them, but I’m bringing you an image of only one now kmt- are more like pieces of art.
Creative director of the label, Linda Mesrob says that Ariaba bags are classy and depicts a sort of vibrancy and sexy energy of its owner.

One Nigerian Boy Speaks to African Leather Goods Designer Juliet David-West of Jidz

Juliet David-West hails from the Kalabari ethnic group of Rivers state, Nigeria. She studied Biological Science for her first degree and is currently working as a Health, Environment and Safety analyst for a leading multi-national Oil and Gas company in Nigeria. My first encounter of Jidz was at the LPM monthly market and it was refreshing to see a witty yet sexual take on bags.

The Jidz Label is a luxury one and its production is done in Northern Africa by skilled artisans using the exquisite leathers like Ostrich, Snakeskin and even crocodile skin. I dropped in for a chat with the labels owner and creative head.

What was the design inspiration and the reasons for the names of the 1st generation of Jidz bags

Roulette.
The design came out of a state of total confusion! Was drawing bags and either they were to complex to be made in reality or it just had one issue. The next thing that came to my head was the hypnotic sign as a result of my confusion. And there you have it. The name Roulette to me was a perfect way of describing the circles.

Sylvie.
An Egyptian inspired design and named it Sylvie cos it was the first piece I sold and it was bought by my sister, Sylvia.

Daisy.
This design was created out of hardware I had and couldn't figure the use for it than to surround them with different colours of suede, depending on the colour combination. The end product looked like a daisy flower and the name Daisy was born.

Genevieve.
A gorgeous, dazzling lace fabric I came across. I couldn't do much with it than to make a basic bag cut.I wanted it to be named after something Nigerian. Couldn't think of a better name to tag this piece than Genevieve, according to a Fashionisto friend of mine. It describes how simple yet dazzling she is.

Who is your ideal customer?
My ideal client is someone who appreciates hand-crafted pieces, the uniqueness of pearls and opts for limited edition pieces.

What sets your bags apart from others?

Before starting out, made a rigorous research to find out if known or unknown brands offered a combination of the details I had in mind. My 3 basic principles became : signature pearl accents on each bag, all bags lined with silk and no mass production of an exact bag.
Any plans to add more product lines to the brand in future?

Yes we do have plans to include more lines, but not in the near future. There's no hurry. Building a brand is more important to me now. When that's done, the issue of expanding will be the case.

The LPM December 2010 issue titled ‘Buy Nigerian’ -in support of the campaign started by Style House Files editor in chief, Omoyemi Akerele, who is one of the most important people in contemporary Nigerian Fashion- kicked off to a grand start with its annual fashion show where Nigerian labels Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Obsidian, Prima Rouge, Akpos Okudu, Rouge Vallari, Re Bahia and House of Nwocha showed their latest collections.
