Ghanaian Label Jil Boutique at The FAB Magazine Night out 2010 in Collaboration with Vlisco

Nigeria and Ghana not only share a common cultural heritage but also a long rivalry in most sporting activities especially soccer. In the fashion world however there’s synergy as opposed to rivalry. As such it was no surprise that Ghanaian label Jil Boutique launched by Anne Marie was invited by FAB magazine to take part in its inaugural night out event which saw the label showcasing a collection made with Vlisco fabrics.
Details as subtle as feathers can make all the difference. Beautiful execution here.

Inspiration Behind the collection

My inspiration came from the current trends in the international fashion scene which is all about metallics and embellishments. This i thought was appropriate since the Christmas season is approaching. I also had a glamorous woman in mind that would be looking for something exquisite yet simple and elegant for a special occasion. I wanted to appeal not only to an African clientele but also to women from different countries and cultures thus the blend of African fabrics with a western design.

Detailing employed in the collection

Many details went into the collection although the clothes looked simple and effortless. I had to create a collection which had a balance, which means we did not want the metallic fabrics or Guipure lace to overshadow our Vlisco prints therefore in order to create that balance much thought went into the designs. I wanted to also create timeless pieces which could be worn over time but still look in vogue, thus the simple and sophisticated approach in my designs.

Shapes in the collection

I wanted to appeal to all style personalities therefore the shapes where diverse. I had structured jackets with skirts and straight dresses to suit the conservative or high powered corporate personality, yet it had a feminine twist. Then i had the long gowns with metallic or guipure lace combined with the Vlisco prints to suit the woman of glamour, who wanted to wear something special. I also had short dresses for the younger clientele; it also was a combination of the Vlisco prints with embellished tulle fabrics and also the metallic fabrics.

Constructive criticism is welcome as well as words of inspiration. Structure your point, no random bitching...
